Travis|||Sounds like you have an issues with your gear box.. might want to take that to a shop man.|||please consult someone it is about jeep because if you don't and try to do your own it became like my jeep.|||sounds like the planetries are not locking in or gear box problems see a mechanic.|||We don't know what's wrong. Show it to somebody in real life, who can hear the noise. That's how you find these things.

It might just be a u-joint. Probably is. They only cost $10.|||Can you tell if it is coming from the front axle or transfer case?

If front axle, look on the right side..Passenger side for a vacuum cylinder mounted on the axle. It moves a sliding sleeve that locks the axle when you go to 4 wheel drive.

Note all cherokees of that age had this, but it is possible you do.

If not, does the sound come from front axle. Internal damage to the ring and pinion and or u-joints due to someone driving in part time four wheel drive on cement.

If noise is transfer case, you should be able to feel it in shift lever, it will have to be rebuilt. Check for metal in oil of transfer case.

Good Luck.|||IT COULD BE THE X-FR CASE OR EVEN THE FRONT U -JOINTS ON THE OUTER END OF THE FRONT AXLES. THE X-FR CASE HAS A LARGE CHAIN IN IT, WHICH SEES ALOT OF WEAR OVER THE YEARS, VERY COMMON ON THE NEW PROCESS 231 X-FR CASE. CHECK FLUID FIRST IN X-FR CASE BY GETTING UNDER VEHICLE AND LOOK TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE CASE YOU WILL SEE A LARGE PLUG. UNTHREAD AND STICK YOUR FINGER IN HOLE. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FEEL THE FLUID. IF YOU CANT, THE X-FR CASE COULD HAVE RAN DRY (CAUSED BY LEAKS) AND BURNT UP THE INTERNALS.|||If you are SURE it is coming out of the front right corner.....

Check the U-joints first as they will make a clunking noise. If you have the Command trac system, then you will have the vaccuum engagement system. With the Select-trac system you don't have it.

The Transfer case is located under the passenger comparment, its attached to the rear of the transmission, and the drive shafts will be attached to the transfer case.
