What is wrong with my 4 wheel drive?

I have a 2002 chevy avalanche Z71 and today i was off roading in 4 wheel high and whenever i would turn kinda sharp i would hear a grinding/rubbing noise. So i put it in 2 wheel drive and i tried turning sharp and it was fine. It only made the grinding/rubbing noise when it was in 4 wheel drive. What is the problem? What do i need to do to fix it? (My truck is completly stock, no aftermarket parts)|||Sounds like either your hubs up front are locking when in 4WD which is normal but this eliminates your differential function thus disabling your front differential function whick will make a grinding/skipping noise up front or you may have a loose u-joint which can also make the same type of noise. More info would help greatly.|||If you were on a hard surface you were likely scrubbing the rubber off the front tires.

There is no differential in the transfer case on those.

When you turn the front tires take a shorter path than the rear tires do.

Because there is no front to rear differential the tires have to scrub to make the distance adjustment.

It is very hard on the tires, the steering and the drive line.

Don't run in 4x on hard surfaces where your tires can't slip.|||Sounds as though It is a blown overdrive gear. Which could cost you a fortune...Or it could be your planetary gear best thing to do is to take it in to a Chevy dealership/mechanic (a good one not some schnook) and tell him what you think it may be. this is only an opinion I'm not under your hood hearing her purr . hoped this helped some.|||differential teeth and getting stripped
