How do you disengage the part time 4 wheel drive in a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country Edition?

Are you kiddin???

Drive on the dirt only slowly in reverse.Push the clutch in and put it in 2wd and release clutch. Then drive forwards....If its an auto, put it in drive, move forward slowly and move into 2wd.stop and reverse back a few metres. Then turn the hubs to free.|||Simply move the transfer case shifter to 2wd. Can be done while moving or stopped, engine on or off. There aren't locking hubs on the XJ from the factory, so you don't have to worry about them.|||Correct, there ARE NOT locking hubs on the Cherokee. What you probably are experiencing is a slight wrap up of the drive train on hard ground. With the jeep straight, apply constant pressure on the lever down toward 2 wheel drive. Move the truck forward, nuetral, and backwards. It will snap out of part time and go to two wheel. As a general rule DO NOT drive in part time unless you are on ice, mud, dirt ect., but not on hard pavement.

Also make sure your tires are air'd up at the same pressure.

Good Luck.
