What is the difference between 4 wheel drive part time and full time?

I just bought a 2004 grand cherkee laredo 4x4, I want to know when i should be using the 4 wheel drive part time and when I should use it fulltime. Thanks for the help|||4 wheel drive (part time) is a vehicle that normally runs in two wheel drive ( either the front two or back two tires pulling or pushing the vehicle) and has the oprtion to engage the other two tires and convert to 4 wheel drive (All tires pulling the vehicle) On the other hand, Full time 4 wheel drive is a vehicle that has a 4 wheels contantly engaged and pulling the vehicle, There is no option to change the vehicle to 2 wheel drive.|||you should use the part time when you ar using it for every day driving and u use full time driving when you are going off roads|||Never use 4 wheel drive on clear pavement. The only time it should be in full time 4W D is off road and then only when needed because of conditions.|||you arent going to hurt it in 4 wheel drive on dry pavement against popular belief, the reason why some ppl think this is because when the NP203 case was around in the 1970's it had a hi loc and a lo loc range and those you could not run on dry pavement because the case locked the front and rears together and bypassed the differential unit on the back of that particular case unlike when it was in hi or lo range, this was a full time case and it had no 2wd position at all

other cases are not locked and will differentiate and you can run it on any surface just fine no worries

use the 4x4 mode when you need it, if you dont then run it in 4x2 mode

its up to you,

good luck|||my 98 jeep is full time 4 wheel drive, i cannot take it out, i can only switch between 4 lo and 4 hi. which is good because it rarely spins the tires but bad because it eats up tires faster and the fuel economy sucks, not bad but it could be better. you should only use 4 lo or hi when conditions dictate it. use 2 hi for normal driving. you can use 4 hi for street driving when conditions dictate, i.e. snow, mudd and such......good luck and enjoy, ITS A JEEP THING ;)|||If you use it full time you will burn more fuel. Use 4x4 only when you need it.
